1. The purpose of a substation is to transform the characteristics of the electrical energy supplied to some form suitable for use, as for example, a conversion from alternating current to direct current for the use of city railway service, or a change from one voltage to another, or one frequency to another. 2. Your computer’s graphics card takes signals from the processor and uses them to “paint” an image on the screen. A graphics card is installed inside the computer’s system unit and provides a connection for the monitor’s data cable. Your computer’s graphics card has to do a lot of work and must do it quickly. To display videos, for example, it repaints every pixel on the screen 15 times per second. More expensive “accelerated” graphics cards are equipped with circuitry that optimizes such tasks. 3. An autonomic or self-adaptive or self-optimizing system may, however, be used to give the best possible performance. In this type of device, of which there are several classes, the parameters of the controller are automatically adjusted so that the system gives an optimum performance according to some in-built criterion of merit. Such systems are more complex than ordinary feedback control systems and require much additional equipment. The idea of autonomic control was conceived by Draper and Li and was first published in 1951. ( 10 scores )
4. Any electrical motor can be brought to a standstill by suddenly reconnecting the supply to reverse the direction of rotation (reverse current braking). Applied under controlled conditions, this method of braking is satisfactory for all drives. Its major disadvantage is that the electrical energy consumed by the machine when braking is equal to the stored energy in the load. This increases the running costs significantly in large drives. 5. A great amount of effort is necessary to maintain an electric power supply within the requirements of the various types of customers served. Large investments are necessary, and continuing advancements in methods must be made as loads steadily increase from year to year. Some of the requirements for electric power supply are recognized by most consumers, such as proper voltage, availability of power on demand, reliability, and reasonable cost. Other characteristics, such as frequency, wave shape, and phase balance, are seldom recognized by the customer but are given constant attention by the utility power engineers. ( 10 scores )
