1. Much to Live For
There is so much I have not been, so much I have not seen. I have not thought and have not done or felt enough -- the early sun, rain and the seasonal delight of flocks of ducks and geese in flight, the mysteries of late-at-night. I still need time to read a book, write poems, paint a picture, look at scenes and faces dear to me. There is something more to be of value-- something I should find within myself -- as peace of
mind, patience, grace and being kind. I shall take and I shall give, while yet, there is so much to live for -- rainbows, stars that gleam, the fields, the hills, the hope, the dreams, the truth that one must seek. I'll stay here -- treasure every day and love the world in my own way!
mystery: something that is not fully understood or that baffles or eludes the understanding; an enigma 秘密,謎
grace: A characteristic or quality pleasing for its charm魅力,優(yōu)雅
rainbow: 虹,彩虹
gleam: To emit a gleam; flash or glow 閃光;閃爍或發(fā)光;閃耀

2.Charles Dickens: A Tale of Two Cities
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us; we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.
despair: to lose all hope絕望, 失望

3. Fog
The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

You are What You Do 你即你所為

Choice of Companions
The Road Not Taken 未走之路 譯文一 Robert Frost 羅伯特?

If 如果
如果眾人在失去理智卻歸咎與你時, 你依然能鎮(zhèn)定自若;
如果在所有人懷疑猜忌你時,仍能自信如常 卻對他人猜忌寬容體諒;
而且不去刻意表現(xiàn)超然不凡或談吐不俗;
如果你充滿夢想,又能夠不被夢想支配; 如果你善于思索,又不只是想想而已 如果你有能力應(yīng)對成功和災(zāi)禍, 并能以同樣態(tài)度對待這兩種欺世假象; 如果你能夠承受聽到自己說出的真言, 被流氓歪曲設(shè)陷坑害缺乏判斷力的人; 或看到自己畢生心血之作被毀壞, 仍能俯身重拾破舊的工具去修建;
如果你獲得大筆收益, 卻傾盡所有冒險一搏, 即使全部失去仍會從頭開始, 而對損失從不吐露半字;

1 If I Were a Boy Again
If I were a boy again, I would practise perseverance oftener, and never give up a thing because it was hard or inconvenient. If we want light, we must conquer darkness. Perseverance can sometimes equal genius in its results. "There are only two creatures," says a proverb, "who can surmount the pyramids—the eagle and the snail."
If I were a boy again, I would school myself into a habit of attention; 1 would let nothing come between me and the subject in hand. I would remember that a good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once. The habit of attention becomes part of our life, if we begin early enough. I often hear grown-up people say, "I could not fix my attention on the lecture or book, although I wished to do so," and the reason is, the habit was not formed in youth.
If I were to live my life over again, I would pay more attention to the cultivation of the memory. I would strengthen that faculty by every possible means, and on every possible occasion. It takes a little hard work at first to remember things accurately; but memory soon helps itself, and gives very little trouble. It only needs early cultivation to become a power.
If I were a boy again, I would look on the cheerful side. Life is very much like a mirror: if you smile upon it, it smiles back upon you; but if you frown and look doubtful on it, you will get a similar look in return.
Inner sunshine warms not only the heart of the owner, but of all that come in contact with it. "Who shuts love out, in turn shall be shut from love."
If I were a boy again, 1 would school myself to say 'No' oftener. 1 might write pages on the importance of learning very early in life to gain that point where a young boy can stand erect, and decline doing an unworthy act because it is unworthy.
If I were a boy again, I would demand of myself more courtesy towards my companions and friends, and indeed towards strangers as well. The smallest courtesies along the rough roads of life are life the little birds that sing to us all winter long, and make that season of ice and snow more endurable.
Finally, instead of trying hard to be happy, as if that were the sole purpose of life, if I were a boy again, try still harder to make others happy.

假如我再回到童年,我會培養(yǎng)自己專心致志的習(xí)慣;一旦手頭有事,決不讓任何東西使我分心。我會牢記:一位優(yōu)秀的溜冰手從不試圖同時滑向兩個不同的方向。如果及早養(yǎng)成專心致志的習(xí)慣,它就會成為我們生命的一個部分。我常常聽到成年人說:“我希望中注意力聽演講或讀書,但往往做不到!逼湓蚓驮谟谀贻p時沒有養(yǎng)成這種習(xí)慣。 假如我能重新活過,我會更加注意培養(yǎng)自己的記憶力。我要采取一切可能的辦法,在一切可能的場合,增強記憶力。要精確地記住一切事物,起初的確要做出一番小小的努力;

2 Ways of Communication
When you speak, write a letter, or make a telephone call, your words carry a message. People communicate with words. But do you know people also communicate without words? A smile on your face shows you are happy or friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad. When you raise your hand in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You shake your head and people know you are saying "No". You nod and people know you are saying "Yes".
Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign at the bus stop helps you to know which bus to take. A sign on the wall of your school helps you to find the library. Signs on the doors tell you where to go in or out. Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them all the time?
People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his drawings to tell about beautiful mountains, the blue seas and many other things. Books are written to tell you about all the wonderful things in the world and what other people are thinking about.
