第111課 倫敦塔
Gretel recently went to the Tower of London She enjoyed her visit very much.
最近格萊托參觀了倫敦塔她非常喜歡這次訪問.
She saw the Crown Jewels in the museum there.
她見到了那兒博物館展出的皇冠上的寶石.
The jewels are carefully guarded by men who still wear 16th century costumes
這些寶石被小心的守護(hù)著,被一些穿著16世紀(jì)服裝
and are known as "Yeomen of the Guard" or "Beefeaters".
叫做王室警衛(wèi)或英國皇家禁衛(wèi)軍儀仗的衛(wèi)士守護(hù)著
Gretel enjoyed walking round the old buildings and on the well-kept lawns
格萊托喜歡漫步在古老的建筑中或漫步在悉心照管的草坪上.
She saw the famous Tower ravens.
她看到了那個著名塔上的渡鴉.
There is a legend that if these birds ever fly away the Tower will fall.
有個傳說講若這些渡鴉飛走了塔也就倒塌了.
It was a bright day and everything looked cheerful.
那天陽光明媚,一切看上去都那么生氣勃勃.
But,as she walked round,

Gretel read about the terrible history of the Tower in her guidebook.

It was once a prison for kings and queens and important people

many of whom were executed there.

Gretel looked at the Traitors' Gate

and imagined famous people walking through it on their way to execution:

two of Henry VIII's wives,Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard;

On such a sunny day,

it was hard to imagine so many dreadful things happening at this place.

Wherever she looked,

Gretel could see tourists everywhere,laughing and enjoying themselves.
